ASKAP gets animated with Swinburne Astronomy Productions

Submitter: Michael Garrett
Description: The Australian SKA Pathfinder, ASKAP, has unexpectedly come to life via the Swinburne Astronomy Productions group, attached to the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing.

Although ASKAP is not expected to be fully operational until 2013, the group at Swinburne have produced an animation that is as realistic as they come.
When completed the telescope will comprise an array of 36 antennas each 12-metres in diameter, capable of imaging out a very large instantaneous field of view. The Australians have adopted the same type of technical solution as the WSRT-APERTIF, employing phased-array feeds at the focus of each antenna.

The Swinburne group are experts in stereographic techniques, science communication and advanced displays, producing outstanding astronomical animations and simulations. The image above captures some stills from the new animation - the Focal Plane Array (FPA) systems are clearly visible (top right).

The full animation can be downloaded from the SKA site: http://www.skatelescope.org/pages/factsmain.htm - the link is clearly labeled under "movies". If you are interested in other animations made by the Swinburne group, take a look at http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/production/
