Description: | After I did a lecture about my discovery of Hanny's Voorwerp through http://www.galaxyzoo.org last year, Mike Garrett invited me and my Galaxy Zoo friends to come back to ASTRON one day for a special tour. It took some time arranging this international meet-up, but a few weeks ago we visited the ASTRON headquarters. In the picture (taken by the bus driver) you see from left to right: Marcel, Tom Oosterloo, Geoff, David, Arie, Yours Truly, Michel, Edd, Els and Jan, at the Westerbork Synthese Radio Telescopes where Tom showed us around. And we were lucky to have a lovely colourful autumn decor as well. We continued our trip to the LOFAR fields, which we thought was the most exciting muddy field ever, and after that we returned to the colloquium room for an interesting talk by Raffaella Morganti. Ronald Halfwerk showed us around the impressive labs and Paul Boven took us to the 25m Dwingeloo telescope, where we listened to a live pulsar! After this exciting program (some of the guys were even happier than kids in a candy shop), we walked back to the main building for drinks, where even more questions were answered with enthusiasm by Paul. Then we all had dinner in Dwingeloo, where we decided we had a wonderful day. More pictures of it can be seen here: http://www.hannysvoorwerp.com/?p=1300 Thanks again to all the people at ASTRON for making this happen! |
