11000001

Submitter: Tom Oosterloo
Description: The 31-st of December is a very special day. It is one of the very few days in the year that is celebrated by almost everybody. However, for our dear WSRT it is just another day (and night) at the office. While everybody is toasting the new year and having fun with fireworks and other festivities, the WSRT is observing, like every night.

The movie shows what the WSRT was looking at that while everybody was having fun. The resulting data shows the kinematics of a ring of neutral hydrogen encircling the galaxy NGC 2594. The set of observations for this object started late on december 31 and finished on 1 jan 2010. It involves the observation with serial number 11000001. The 110 at the beginning indicates it is an observation done in 2010, and the 00001 means it is the first one of that year. It will be followed by many many more. The last observation of 2009 has number 10905996: the WSRT did 5996 observations during 2009.
