Floating island

Submitter: Rik ter Horst
Description: It's always fun to have a telescope and a camera ready to shoot with. When visiting the Waddenzee somewhere in August 2009 Schiermonnikoog looked a bit unusual; Temperature gradients in the air over the cool, open water caused light from the island and its surroundings to curve in unusual ways en route to the camera. The apparent gap between the island and the sea is actually an upside-down image of the sky above. This image (a panoramic view of three stitched images) was made using a homemade 1500 mm telescope and a Canon EOS 300D camera.
