First lightning detection by LOFAR

Submitter: Sander ter Veen
Description: This is the first lightning event detected by LOFAR at 9 june 2009 18:46 local time. The map shows an all sky image of a single spark with only 5 microseconds of data. The inlay shows the lightning events between 18:45 and 18:50 as recoreded by buienradar.nl. The center is also CS302 therefore the lightning position matches with the real lightning.

The image was made with Transient Buffer Board data from only 5 LBA antennas of CS302. The east - west baseline was shorter than the north - south baseline which explains the elongated point spread function in that direction. Each ring is 15 degrees of elevation. The sky map was swapped according to astronomical standards to match the ground map of the center.

Now that LOFAR is already half finished we hope to take some more data this summer with more stations to study lightning in detail using 5 dimensional TBB sky maps.
