Presidential visit to EMBRACE in Moura

Submitter: ASPO
Description: Last week, the Portuguese president Cavaco Silva visited Moura for the official opening of the Technical Laboratories of Lógica and an official visit to an operational set of "EMBRACE" (Electronic Multibeam Radio Astronomy Concept) tiles. Obviously, this high-level visit made everybody switch into high gear and we note with quiet satisfaction that everything went extremely well.

The pictures show Dr Domingos Barbosa illustrating the working of the tiles on behalf of the Portuguese SKA interest. He is closely watched by Andrew Faulkner of the recently kicked-off Aperture Array Verification Program (AAVP). For the subsequent demonstration (tracking a few satellites) the tiles were remotely operated from ASTRON. Domingos performed truly marvellously, handling interviews with all major TV stations and other manifestations of the press with debonair affability.

Another picture shows AAVP leader Arnold van Ardenne being honoured to sit (and eat) at the Presidents Table, which gave him the opportunity to raise the visibility of SKA from a European perspective.

Just as a reminder, the Moura region South East from Evora, also houses the 60 MW SolarPV plant shown earlier as AJDI 03112008. This first batch of EMBRACE tiles was moved out to Moura as an initial step towards the development of the selected reference test-site for AA's.
