Description: | During a special ceremony on saturday June 12, Queen Beatrix has officially opened LOFAR. The ceremony was held near the LOFAR core, between Buinen en Exloo in Drenthe. In an impressive multimedia show, scientists, politicians, environmentalists and captains of industry elaborated on the importance of LOFAR, while also the first LOFAR images were shown. This presentation was the prelude for the official opening, which was done by Beatrix by pushing a button which started observations by LOFAR, of which the results were displayed on the large screen in real time. After the official program, several people who were involved in the making of LOFAR were introduced to the Queen. Finally, Beatrix visited a nearby LOFAR station where General Director Mike Garrett, dressed for the occasion, further explained the wonders of LOFAR to Beatrix After the opening an agreement was signed by The Netherlands, France, Germany, Sweden and the UK about the joint exploitation of LOFAR. |
