Today's colloquium: The turbulent interstellar medium: confluence of observations and numerical simulations (Snezana Stanimirovic, U. of Wisconsin)

Submitter: Stefanie Muehle
Description: Simulating the distribution of stars and gas in galaxies is still extremely difficult, primarily because of the highly complex and dynamic interstellar medium (as shown in the figure above). To provide detailed prescriptions for star formation and its feedback, necessary for global numerical simulations, we need first to understand the process of cold cloud formation and evolution in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM).
In my talk I will focus on two main questions:(i) How do turbulent properties of the ISM correlate with interstellar environments, and (ii) what are the main ways of forming cold, low column density clouds. To investigate these questions, we use HI observations and various numerical simulations, applying the same analysis methods on both observed and synthetic spectra. By using the same methodology we can both constrain the physical properties of the ISM and test numerical models.
