In Memoriam: Titus Spoelstra (1944-2010)

| Description: | Only recently, Titus retired from ASTRON, after 33 years. Please refer to the Daily Image of 7 Nov 2008 for details of his long and productive career. Because it is difficult find a better one, we have reproduced the same charming picture here, of Titus and his Henny. After only a very brief retirement, Titus has now succumbed to the disease that has plagued him for many years, and which he bore with remarkable fortitude and equanimity. Up to the last, while his body could do less and less, he went out of his way to reach out graciously. Many of us from the (admittedly senior part of the) Dutch astronomical community said goodbye to him in the Catholic church of Zorgvlied. As is so often the case, the speeches revealed sides of Titus that we did not know about. Our thoughts go to Henny, who now lives alone in their little idyll in the woods near Diever. |
