Summer student project: WSRT observations of Giant Radio Galaxy 4C73.08

Submitter: Rurong Chen
Description: During the Summer Student Programme 2010, I reduced the WSRT data of the giant radio galaxy 4C73.08. The reduction of this 12-hrs observation was done with AIPS and Difmap. The giant radio galaxy 4C73.08 is an FR-II type radio source, with extended radio components of about 1.1 Mpc in linear size. The redshift of the host galaxy is 0.0581.

The observations were made by Richard Strom in 2008. With the perfect UV coverage, we achieved the most sensitive image of this radio source, in which we detected about 40 individual radio sources apart from the GRG.

In the image, the contour lines show the total intensity of this GRG. The pseudo-colour represents the distribution of polarization ratio, in which we observe highly ordered magnetic fields at the edges of the lobes and hotspots, indicating the existence of strong interactions between jets and the intergalactic medium. The white sticks display the polarization vectors.
