Description: | In April, a meeting was held in Manchester on the topic of "Resolving the Sky - Radio Interferometry: Past, Present and Future or "RTS 2012" for short. The meeting marked the retirement of Richard Schilizzi as Director of the SKA Program Development Office (SPDO). The meeting was a resounding success - everyone involved enjoyed it immensely, including Richard himself. The participants included some of the early pioneers of interferometry, including several of the VLBI founding fathers. The meeting focused on the past, present and future of interferometry, the latter also including the first results from the space VLBI radio telescope, Radioastron. Many of the participants were accompanied by their partners, and excursions to the Museum of Science & Industry and Jodrell Bank Observatory were also organised. Early radar equipment (H2S2) developed by Sir Bernard Lovell (founder of JBO) were on show at the museum where the conference dinner was also held. During the visit to JBO, Richard led a ground-breaking ceremony for the new building that will accommodate the SKA Project Office (SPO). A complete record of the meeting is available online, and includes the programme, presentations, speeches and many, many(!) photographs - see http://www2.skatelescope.org/indico/conferenceOtherViews.py?view=standard&confId=178 The picture above shows Richard, his wife Biddy and their family at the conference dinner. |
