ASTRON/JIVE MTB outing 2012

Submitter: Joeri van Leeuwen
Description: The Dwingelderveld National Park is the largest wet heathland of Western-Europe, and an all-terrain bike trail cuts through a variety of brush, forest, sandy dunes, country roads and heath. The trail start rights in front of ASTRON, so it's a perfect quick get-away. It is scenic but not too difficult, so even beginners can bike it. For this 3rd edition of the ASTRON/JIVE MTB outing, on June 6, about 25 people signed up -- ranging from summer students to retirees. The forecast was not as great as it had been the two years before however, and indeed, the day was rainy and the trail was muddy.

Thus the organizer was very proud to see a 100% turnout (bravo! -- rainy top panel), and away we went. The heath is kept free from trees by cows and sheep and we had to make our way through these herds several times (middle). The mud was deep, the going got tough, it was a lot of fun, as the bottom row of muddy smiling faces will tell you. See you next year.
