Gauging the status of AA calibration

Submitter: Stefan Wijnholds, on behalf of the LOC/SOC
Description: With kind support from the European SKA Consortium it became possible to organize a workshop on calibration and calibratability of aperture arrays (AAs). On 12 and 13 July 2012, a group of experts met in the Novotel Amsterdam Airport Hotel for the AA Calibration and Calibratability Meeting (AACal 2012). The participants showed that, over the last few years, considerable progress has been made in the following areas:

  • calibratability and image reconstructability requirements
  • development of new and fast (direction dependent) calibration algorithms
  • beam modeling for forward prediction and reduction of the number of beam calibration parameters
  • development of end-to-end simulation toools

Their contributions provide an excellent overview of the current state-of-the-art in AA calibration and will form the foundations for an SKA memo summarizing the current status and identifying the next steps to be taken towards successful deployment of AAs in the SKA context. The participants found the meeting the be very fruitful and suggested to have a similar meeting at some appropriate time in the future.
