Workshop in Portugal; more European Interest for SKA?

Description: On November 30th, under the aegis of Portugal-Africa and Europe-Africa Cooperation AERAP, a special workshop was held in Lisbon. Its subject was: "The Square Kilometer Array: a large-scale ESFRI Infrastructure, from the Cosmos to the Cities of the Future".

This workshop was a side-event of the "2012 Africa-EU Cooperation Week on ICT", organised by the EuroAfrica-ICT/P8 Initiative, from November 26-30, 2012 in Lisbon, Portugal ( www.euroafrica-ict.org) under patronage of the Portuguese Committee of the International Union for Radio Science (URSI) and ANACOM.

This workshop presented the SKA to the broad Portuguese, European and African scientific community, and to industry and policy makers. The event was preceded by a reception by the Embassy of South Africa in Lisbon, with the presence of meeting participants, Portuguese academia and industry, Spanish colleagues and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Government.

The picture shows the attendees at the venue, the Auditorio, Fundacao Portuguesa das Comunicacoes. The SKA Organisation was represented by its Director-General, Phil Diamond and the Vice-Chair of the Board, Patricia Vogel from NWO. FCT President Miguel Seabra was one of the speakers. Also, 3 Portuguese Universities, the Portuguese Astronomical Society, 2 major PT Tech Poles (TICE and ENERGYIn), as well as 7 major PT-based companies/multinationals from ICT, Energy and Space sectors were in attendance.
