Submitter: | Wim van Cappellen for the APERTIF team |
Description: | On Thursday 31 January 2013, the quiet WSRT site was disturbed by a procession of trucks that delivered 12 Telescope Cabins, made from standard freight containers. These will provide a watertight housing for the receivers and digital processing systems of the APERTIF Phased Array Feeds. A Faraday cage has been installed inside to shield the sensitive radio telescopes from the RF interference that is radiated by the electronics. The shielding is more than 100 dB up to at least 6 GHz and an air-conditioning system keeps the internal temperature in the desired range. The cabins have been manufactured by the Dutch company COMTEST Engineering B.V. that specializes in EMC test facility planning, engineering and installation services. As experts in the field, they have provided similar cabins to LOFAR, and to KAT-7 in South Africa. The containers are currently at a temporary location. They will be moved to their final destination, under the telescopes, within a few months. |
