New Horizons Message Initiative

Description: The New Horizon spacecraft was launched in 2006, and is expected to make a close approach to Pluto and its moons in 2015. After the Pluto encounter, the spacecraft should also be able to take a look at various Kuiper belt objects at the edge of the solar system. The probe is on a solar escape trajectory but unlike the Voyager and Pioneer spacecraft, it carries no message from planet Earth.

The New Horizons Message Initiative spearheaded by Jon Lomberg (the original Voyager Golden Record design director) hopes to persuade NASA to upload a message to the spacecraft's memory, following a successful Pluto encounter. Jon is supported and advised by an international advisory board that includes myself and Daniele de Paulis from the Netherlands. The content of the message is still to be decided but is likely to be put together with crowd-sourcing techniques via the web and other social media.
