Description: | On January 21st, a type Ia supernova was discovered in M82, by a group of astronomy students from London during an introductory demonstration of how to use the CCD camera on one of the University of London Observatory's automated 0.35-metre telescopes. Since then, it has brightened to about magnitude 10.7 and it may continue to brighten still. The colour of the supernova seems to be shifted to orange due to obscuring dust in M82. These two images were made with a 0.4 metre telescope from downtown Beilen. North is at the bottom of the images. |
