LOFAR HBA repair

| Description: | The daily image of February 10th showed a severely storm-damaged LOFAR high band antenna (HBA) tile, that had to be transported carefully to a suitable barn. It has now been taken apart, and almost 60% of the polystyrene had to be replaced. The result was that we almost had to build a completely new tile. The security guards of the WSRT gathered the spare parts from the warehouse near the WSRT, and lent a hand in the reconstruction. We learned a lot about optimizing the repair process. The stepwise procedure we developed can also be used for the production of small series of new HBA antenna tiles. The picture shows the flexibility of our WSRT security staff, involved as they are in a totally different activity outside their normal work. |
