Farewell Symposium Mike

Submitter: Roy van der Werp
Description: Today, we say goodbye to our General and Scientific Director Prof. Dr. Michael (Mike) Garrett. Since April 1996 Mike has been employed by NWO. First at JIVE where he started as Assistant to the Director (Richard Schilizzi). On May 1, 2003 he took over from Richard and became the new director of the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE). Since February 2007 he has been in office as General and Scientific Director of ASTRON. After twenty years NWO he will take up the position of the first holder of the newly created Sir Bernard Lovell Chair in Astrophysics, and as Director of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Manchester, leading the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics and the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Manchester. He will start there on September 1st.

Today, we have a festive programme highlighting a number of areas Mike has taken an interest in and has contributed to. Of course it is also a day to reflect on the past twenty years.

We wish Mike all the best in Manchester and are sure that our paths will continue to cross in the future both here in Dwingeloo as well as in Manchester.
