CORTEX: Self-learning machines hunt for explosions in the Universe

Submitter: Joeri van Leeuwen and Antonia Rowlinson
Description: Today the National Science Agenda has awarded a 5 million euro grant to CORTEX (the Centre for Optimal, Real-Time Machine Studies of the Explosive Universe), which is led by ASTRON’s own Joeri van Leeuwen with Antonia Rowlinson.

The CORTEX consortium features 13 partners from academia, industry and society working together to significantly speed up machine learning algorithms to search for cosmic explosions and for wider applications in society.

Within ASTRON, we will work on Apertif fast transients (Joeri), LOFAR image transients (Antonia), algorithm acceleration (John Romein), and the CORTEX program management (Agnes Mika).
