Veder prize for Wim van Cappellen

Submitter: Mark Bentum
Description: The "Stichting Wetenschappelijk Radio-Fonds Veder" was founded in 1927 by Anton Veder, who was an enthusiastic radio amateur with a profound interest in radio science. The foundation aims at stimulating the development of radio science in the widest sense. Almost every year the Foundation awards a prize to one or more scientists of Dutch nationality who have made extraordinary achievements in the field of radio- or related sciences and techniques. The Veder prize is considered a very prestigious prize for radio work in the Netherlands.

This year Wim van Cappellen will receive the Veder prize for his work on the APERTIF system on the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The APERTIF reception system that Wim has been working on is unique, consisting of many small so-called "Vivaldi antennas" at the focal point of the 25-meter Westerbork dishes. The new system allows immediate observation of a 40-times larger field of view than with traditional receivers.

Almost 50 years after the mechanical realization of the 12 (now 14) telescopes has been completed, the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope has received a new scientific impulse and new astrophysical research in the radio domain has become possible.
