There and back again

Submitter: Harish Vedantham
Description: Prof. Shri Kulkarni visited ASTRON between the 17th and 19th of June, as part of his sabbatical in the Netherlands. Shri is an old hand at radio astronomy. He wrote his PhD thesis on 21-cm observations of the Galactic ISM while co-discovering the first millisecond pulsar on the side. Over the years, Shri has slowly but surely been drawn into optical transients. He is now the PI of the Zwicky Transient Facility, the successor to the eminently successful Palomar Transient Factory.

Regardless, anyone who has worked on obscure and subtle aspects of interferometry (Kulkarni, 1989, AJ, 98, 1112) must be hopelessly smitten by the radio-bug. It comes as no surprise to us that Shri wants to get back to his radio-astronomy roots. He enthusiastically attended the LOFAR science meeting and was impressed by the science coming out of LOFAR. In customary fashion, he was last spotted beavering away at a paper about a new idea.

We couldn't be happier with this re-entry. As a further inducement, we took Shri HI- and pulsar-observing on the Dwingeloo dish and gave him a tour of the Westerbork telescope and the LOFAR superterp. Pictured here is Shri at the superterp with his PhD student Chris Bochenek.

Welcome back to the fold, Shri, and it goes without saying that you are always welcome at ASTRON.
