Successful Veni Grant for Joe Callingham

Submitter: Joseph Callingham
Description: Our de Bruyn postdoctoral fellow Joe Callingham was recently awarded the highly-competitive Veni grant by the NWO. NWO selects Veni laureates on the basis of the following criteria: quality of the researcher, innovative character of the research, expected academic impact of the research proposal and possibilities of knowledge utilisation. The Veni grants have a ~10% success rate. Joe will be taking the grant to Leiden Observatory early next year.

In his new fellowship, Joe will be using LOFAR to identify planets around other stars and to test whether the space weather conditions. The title of his project is "Life around a radio star" and the public project description is below (the attached image is from Joe's Veni interview title slide):

"Astronomers can now easily identify planets outside our Solar System. However, it remains a mystery if such planets can host life. This project will conduct a radio survey of nearby stars to discover the type of space weather such planets experience, and whether those conditions allow such planets to be habitable."
