ASTRON/JIVE Astrofest 2019

Submitter: Joseph Callingham
Description: We held the annual ASTRON/JIVE astrofest on Wednesday the 6th of November in Zwolle. Astrofest is designed to allow all the astronomers associated with ASTRON and JIVE to spend a relaxed day together hearing about some of the awesome science that is being done in the building.

People presented on the work they are doing now, recent results, a proposal that had recently submitted, an idea that just had, or a key question in their field. The design was flexible, with pretty much any topic on the table - including how learning about GPUs to process Apertif data can help with virtual reality gaming.

After starting with a great talk by Gina Maffey and Alice Spruit about how to give a good talk, talks were randomly drawn out of the hat on the day. We had 17 talks in total, with topics ranging from VLBI detections of stars to using graph theory to study the pulsar population.

We finished with an astronomy pubquiz that was won by Team Gold (made up of Kas, Owen, Silvan, Paul, and Joeri). Hope everyone enjoyed a fun day!
