Casacore 3.3.0 released

Submitter: Tammo Jan Dijkema
Description: Casacore 3.3.0 was recently released. Casacore forms the foundation for many radio astronomy packages, such as DPPP and CASA.

The most used part of casacore is the casacore table data system (CTDS), the system that writes visibility data from the correlator to disk, in the form of a Measurement Set. CTDS is written by Ger van Diepen.

Casacore 3.3.0 is not a big release in terms of features added or bugs fixed. It is a point release before some bigger changes will happen. One big change about to come is the support of 64 bit row numbers. This will make it possible for measurement sets to have more than 232=4,294,967,296 rows (baselines times timeslots).

With casacore 3.3.0, also the python bindings in python-casacore were upgraded to version 3.3.0. For linux machines, python-casacore is shipped as a binary wheel, which makes that
pip install python-casacore
will install the latest version without the need of compiling anything.

Contributors to casacore 3.3.0 are among others: Ger van Diepen, Tammo Jan Dijkema, André Offringa (ASTRON), Rodrigo Tobar (ICRAR), Darell Schiebel (NRAO), Dirk Petry (ESO), Mark Kettenis (JIVE), Steve Ord (CSIRO), Simon Perkins (SKA SA) and Gijs Molenaar.

The notebook in the picture shows some basic usage of python-casacore. I apologize for not making this notebook available in an interactive environment (Binder). I planned to do so to demonstrate how trivial that would be, however it wasn't.
