Where are we now? Celebrating John Romein 25 year at ASTRON/NWO

Submitter: Albert-Jan Boonstra and Walter Jansen
Description: A man with a mission, always focused at investigating the latest, newest, and most powerful electronic systems. Not just from a scientific perspective, but aimed at applying it in our newest radio telescope designs to enable scientific discoveries. The picture shows John’s rigorous way of approaching research, presented at one of the IBM-ASTRON DOME project face to face meetings several years ago. It lists typical real-time algorithms in radio astronomy and the accelerator electronic hardware that was used for assessing the efficiency of running the algorithms. The columns show the systems that were assessed by him and his team, and the ones still on the to-do list. The last column shows a promising higher programming language that was investigated, but that’s another story in itself. Without aiming for completeness, the list of projects and systems John worked and works on is long: the first LOFAR BlueGene correlator, COBALT1&2, AARTFAAC, IDG, DAS-5, fast W projection, to name a few. John, on behalf of the Computing Group, congratulations!
