Colloquium 11 June 2020: Bradley Frank (University of Cape Town)

Submitter: Bradley Frank
Description: MIGHTEE-HI: Early Science and Processing

Abstract: MIGHTEE is a 20 sq. deg. survey that will be done with the MeerKAT radio telescope. At L-band, we expect to reach a per channel sensitivity of 100 microJy/beam (26kHz/channel) over a wide area out to a maximum redshift of z~0.5.
Over the past two years we have accumulated pilot 4k data for a selection of the MIGHTEE fields, as part of Early Science campaign. The coarse velocity resolution (208kHz/44km/s) provides an excellent opportunity to commission the spectral line aspect of the MIGHTEE, as managed and coordinated by the MIGHTEE-HI working group.
Managing and processing the data has been enormously challenging, but has produced some exciting results. In my talk, I will talk briefly about MIGHTEE-HI’s science cases, emerging early science highlights, and will focus on the developments and progress related to the processing of the 4k data, in anticipation for full survey operations.
