Open source software development pays off

| Description: | For a couple of years now our software teams have been using the Atlassian tools Jira (bottom left in the image) and Confluence (bottom right in the image) to manage and document our projects, and to support users. The tools have grown extremely useful to streamline workflows, but despite our Academic licence being relatively inexpensive, it was still a significant cost for a publicly funded organisation like ASTRON. Atlassian recently decided to offer their tools free of charge for projects that adhere to open source principles. After consultation with the Open Source Committee, it was decided to apply for this option, using the LOFAR source code repository (top image) as our main example project. We are pleased to announce that Atlassian very quickly decided to grant us access to their tools free of charge. The money saved will be reinvested in improving the scientific capabilities of our instruments. |
