Colloquium (24 September 2020): Maxim Lyutikov (Purdue University)

Submitter: Maxim Lyutikov
Description: “On the nature of Fast Radio Bursts”

Generation of high brightness coherent emission by pulsars and other types of neutron stars is a 50+ years old problem in astrophysics. Observationally, radio carries tiny fraction of the total energetics. Theoretically, production of coherent emission depends on kinetic details of the particle distribution function at the source. Breakthrough discoveries of the last years in the field of Fast Radio Bursts brought these topics ``back to the frontline”. I will argue that new ideas are required.
