Data release from the first year of the Apertif imaging surveys

Submitter: Betsey Adams
Description: The Apertif imaging team has released science data from the first year of science operations of WSRT-Apertif as the Apertif Data Release 1 (DR1). The imaging data collected by Apertif in its first year of observing, which started on 1 July 2019, is now available to the entire astronomical community. This data release follows on an earlier release of data from the Apertif Science Verification Campaign.

The background image above shows the sky coverage of the Apertif DR1; the orange areas indicate regions of the sky with released data products, covering just over 1000 square degrees of sky. You can visualize the Apertif data release at https://hips.astron.nl/ASTRON/P/apertif_dr1/ by exploring a (non primary-beam corrected) HiPS continuum image. The inset image on the left shows the continuum emission from an interesting radio galaxy, highlighting the sensitivity and resolution of the Apertif continuum images. The inset image on the right shows the extent of the neutral hydrogen (HI) emission (contours) relative to the optical galaxy (background image), demonstrating the power of blind surveys for identifying galaxies with intriguing HI properties.

You can find more information about the data release at https://www.astron.nl/telescopes/wsrt-apertif/apertif-dr1-documentation/ and you can access and explore the released data products at https://vo.astron.nl/.

The Apertif surveys will continue throughout 2021, so with this and future data releases we are looking forward to great scientific results!
