Radiosterrenkunde in Dwingeloo 1979-1984

Submitter: Tammo Jan Dijkema
Description: From the legacy of Dick Hoogenraad, I got a collection of dozens popular articles that he wrote for the weekly "Siepelnieuws" from 1979 to 1985. I will put them in the ASTRON archive, but for your reading pleasure I also scanned them.

The series 'Radiosterrenkunde in Dwingeloo' spans 23 articles intended for the general public. They give an impression of what SRZM (now ASTRON) was up to in the early eighties. The full series can be found at http://www.tammo80.nl/files/radiosterrenkunde_in_dwingeloo.pdf (by all means transfer this to a more suitable location).

Dick Hoogenraad was 'hoger technikus' at SRZM, but he was also interested and skilled(*) in outreach, which also became part of his official function. We already encountered some of his video work before.

(*) Note by Jan Noordam: I am pleased that the contribution of Dick Hoogenraad is being highlighted here. We "did" the local outreach together for a while around 1980, and I was impressed by his skill in explaining radio astronomy to a wide range of different kinds of visitors. He was much better than (most of) the professionals, who were not always the best judges of what a particular group really wanted to know. This generated a lot of local goodwill. And pride in the long line of famous radio telescopes in Drenthe.
