A new year, a new project

Submitter: Carla Baldovin
Description: LOFAR Data Valorisation (LDV) is a new project started by ASTRON in January 2021 that will run until 2023. After 10 years of operations, LOFAR has collected and impressive amount of scientific data; the long-term archives currently host about 50 PB of data, and keep growing every day. Most of the data are in the form of raw or preprocessed data, far from being science-ready and useful to the broader astronomical community of non-experts.

This is one of the main motivations to start LDV, which main objectives are: (1) to give added value to the LOFAR data in the LTA, generating higher-level data products and make these available to the community in subsequent data releases; (2) to reduce the volume of the data in the archive, which will directly reduce the operational costs - the goal is to reduce occupancy at SURF by 11 PB by the end of the first year of the project.

To achieve its goals, LDV relies on ongoing external developments such as Prefactor4, Rapthor and the LOFAR-VLBI pipelines. The project will adopt those pipelines, prepare the processing workflows and then reprocess all the data in the archive.

During 2021-2022 LDV will operate on the SURF LTA only; the project is supported by a grant from NWO that provides computing capacity, disk storage and technical support from SURF over this period. The plan in LDV is then to move on to the LTAs in Juelich and Poznan in 2023.

The picture was taken during the first progress meeting between the LDV team and the technical support team from SURF held on January 26. We look forward to successfully complete LDV objectives… and to more daily images!
