Congratulations Dr. Alex Cooper!

Submitter: Antonia Rowlinson
Description: On 16th December 2022, Alex Cooper successfully defended his thesis Multi-messenger & multi-wavelength signatures of compact object transients. Alex's PhD was a shared ASTRON/UvA project. He was supervised by Ralph Wijers (UvA) and Antonia Rowlinson (ASTRON/UvA).

Alex's thesis focused on the signatures of compact object transients, merging theory with observations and predictions of emission. The broad range of topics in his thesis include Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), magnetars and compact binary mergers. For example, he used imaging observations from LOFAR to constrain FRB-like emission from SGR 1935+2154 during a recent burst storm.

In addition to his thesis, Alex was also involved in developing scripts to automatically trigger rapid response LOFAR observations on transient objects including Galactic Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs).

Congratulations Alex!
