Kerastari meeting 2023

Submitter: Pikky Atri
Description: On behalf of (in the image from the left) Pikky Atri, Benito Marcote, Shivani Bhandari, Emma van der Wateren, Kaustubh Rajwade and Willem Baan.
Last week (12th-17th June), a few of us from ASTRON and JIVE attended a conference that focussed on 'Timing and Imaging of compact source with SKA precursors' in a small village (Kerastari)in Greece. The Kerastari conference is organised every 5 years on different topics by Dr. Tasso Tzioumis in his quaint village of Kerastari. The population of that village is 5 people (4 adults and a child) and around a few hundred sheep. During summer time, immigrants from Canada and Australia come for long visits to their parental homes and made a population of 25 during our visit. So a group 60 astronomers doubled the population of the village for a week.

We were privy to a range of exciting science and developments that are being done with SKA precursors in the Northern and Southern hemisphere. There were planned discussions everyday and ample time for unplanned discussions. It also helped that the conference was in such a remote place that we had nothing else to do other than enjoy the view and think about astronomy. And eat of course, one thing is certain: if you are attending a conference in Greece you will always be well fed.
