A novel radio imaging method for physical spectral index modelling

Submitter: André Offringa
Description: In collaboration with several ASTRON scientists, Emilio Ceccotti, who is a PhD student at the University of Groningen, published his first paper. The paper describes a technique to model radio astronomical sources including their spectral information. In the paper, he demonstrates the technique both on simulated and real LOFAR observations.

What this technique allows is to describe a source using point and Gaussians components, each with a spectral index. Describing a source like this is particularly useful for calibration and accurate subtraction. These two are crucial for Epoch of Reionization experiments, and this is where Emilio will try to use this method for in future papers.

The image shows 4C+55.16. The first three columns show existing methods, and the last column shows his new method. Important is that the spectral map of the model (first row) is much more realistic compared to previous methods. The other rows show residuals at different frequencies.
