Summer students flag planting ceremony

Submitter: Marjan Tibbe
Description: Time flies; it was already time to say goodbye to the ASTRON and JIVE summer students!
On 9 August we organized a small farewell party for them.

The ASTRON and JIVE Summer programme is an opportunity for students with astronomy, physics, computer science or comparable backgrounds to spend the summer (10-12 weeks) at the HQ in Dwingeloo to conduct astronomical studies under the supervision of ASTRON and JIVE staff members.

All attendants brought some self-made food: a specialty from their home country. A snack, salad, soup, dessert (tiramisu, melktaart!) or main dish.

An official flag planting ceremony was part of the farewell party. The 2016 summer students started the tradition by buying a world map and planting a flag in their respective home countries. This was continued in the following years (with the exception of 2020 and 2021).

From left to right the photo shows Lasse (Denmark), Keisuke (Japan), Kathleen (South Africa), Karina (South Africa), Akshat (India) and Paul (Kenya). The flags are not very visible on the photo – for the ‘real stuff’ you can view the board in the visitors room at the first floor, building 1980.
