Radio bursts from Jupiter as seen with the LOFAR2.0 Test Station

Submitter: Cees Bassa
Description: The LOFAR2.0 hardware in CS001 - the LOFAR2.0 Test Station (L2TS) - is being put through its paces to validate its operational readiness. For this, the LBA and HBA antenna fields are configured to observe various sources while recording station statistics. During a recent observation we pointed the LBA station beam towards Jupiter, recording beamlet statistics as well as crosslet statistics for all 96 antennas. We were treated to radio bursts from Jupiter due to the interaction with its moon Io. The image shows one single frame from a movie covering one hour of data. The left hand panel shows the dynamic spectrum from the beamlet statistics, revealing the radio bursts at frequencies up to 30MHz. The all sky image shown in the right hand panel has been created from imaging the crosslet statistics data and is at 25MHz, showing that the bursting towards the direction of Jupiter.

Besides bursts from Jupiter, some giant pulses from the Crab pulsar are visible as well (denoted by Tau A, the supernova remnant hosting the Crab pulsar).
