Guest lesson at the Roelof van Echten College

Submitter: Mischa Brendel
Description: On January 15th, Mark Olijve, Scott Polotto, Gerda Sikkens, Mischa Brendel and Amelie Finan, intern at the Communication Department, visited the second class vmbo of the Roelof van Echten College in Hoogeveen.

The goal was to familiarize the students with what we make and to at ASTRON in the field of mechanics and electronics, in preparation for the internship fair Hoogeveen on stage, at the end of this month, which these students will visit (and where we will be as well).

In preparation for this lesson, Scott had printed out about 15 planetarium construction sets, which students could assemble and operate themselves with the help of an instruction sheet. After calibration, the model could even predict moon phases several years ahead.

Mark had brought a good number of soldering irons, which students could use to solder together the circuit boards he had also brought with him. When assembled properly, students would have an electronic mini-piano.

Although both challenges proved more difficult for some students than others, everyone was working hard on their assignments. Mark and Scott had their hands full with helping out, but they knew how to explain everything very well and managed to keep everything on track.

All in all, we look back on a successful afternoon, during which the students not only learned what we do at ASTRON, but also had a lot of fun.
