ICD EMC^2 peers at Wireless Data Lab

Submitter: Johan Pragt
Description: ICD companies and technicians with special EMC knowledge of high-frequency electronics learn from each other: together we are stronger.
January 25 there was a measurement session of five companies (VARIASS, Ventura, Spark Holland, ZIUZ, Pink Fluffy Unicorns, ASTRON) at Astron's Wireless Data Lab (WDL).
ZIUZ and Ventura had the courage to show their design to specialists from other companies and test it live for radiated performance. This was especially exciting for Ventura's design: a completely new design of a bus-doorknob with a lot of functionality, but never measured for (unwanted) radio emission: that might give uncomfortable discussions. But it amazed everyone: the design appears to be within the standards (note: the test is not intended for approval).
These tests were secondary priority: the main priority is the in-depth discussions that arise about electronic design, shielding, smart electronic and mechanical solutions, cables, connectors, standards, measurements, ....

Ventura's technicians went home very satisfied: their design shows to be good in the first test, still several other tests to go.
The ZIUZ technicians went home with a lot of extra measurement data, which showed that the design is also satisfactory at much lower frequencies.
The EMC specialists of the ICD companies know better than anyone: start with a good design. Several knowledge sharing sessions to go.

EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) and electronics: unwanted contamination or sensitivity of radio emitting and receiving electronics. It is becoming increasingly important and more difficult to comply with the EMC guidelines.
