Meidendag and Girls' Day

Submitter: Mischa Brendel
Description: On Wednesday March 6th and Thursday March 7th, we had Meidendag and Girls’ Day respectively.

On Meidendag we opened the doors of our Open Science Hub in the Huis van Drenthe in the afternoon to girls from ages 10 to 12. The girls could create their own planets, build their own pulsar, and of course take a look in the Open Science Hub to learn more about the Milky Way. We got to welcome around twenty children who had a great time.

On Thursday afternoon, we welcomed girls from three different schools from Stadskanaal, Meppel, and Assen. After an introductory talk by Emma van der Wateren, each separate school got to learn more about the Dwingeloo radio telescope, electromagnetic interference, and how to design and build components for a (radio) telescope.

After that, the girls had some work to do: Communications intern Amelie Finan gave the girls a lecture about the habitability of (exo) planets. The course ended with the students receiving a sheet containing information about two exoplanets, for which they had to figure out whether or not these planets could contain life. During this afternoon, a reporter from RTV Drenthe came by as well to take some interviews and film some of the students during the exoplanet workshop. The article will be posted on the website of RTV Drenthe on March 8th.

The students left having had a good day, full of information and fun.

All in all, we look back upon two successful days in which we hope to have inspired some children to become the astronomers, engineers, and programmers of the next generation.

A special thanks goes to the colleagues who volunteered to help out these two days: Joanne Jager, Harm Buist, Emma van der Wateren, Tammo Jan Dijkema, Paula Fusiara, Menno Norden, and Amelie Finan.
