Relativity in Carré

Submitter: Joeri van Leeuwen
Description: Many Dutch aspiring comedians hope to one day shine in the limelight of The Royal Theater Carré in Amsterdam. They dream about that highlight of their career -- the famous 19th century house filled with the laughter brought forth by their jokes.

All that my jokes produce, however, are groans.

I can, however, explain the work of Lorentz and Einstein, and it turns there is an audience for that too! For the last decade I have been working with Universiteit van Nederland, creating on-line lectures for the general public, on astronomy, physics, and space -- including a series on time travel [1]. So when UvNL planned a one-time-only live evening show in Carré about "time", for their 10-year anniversary, I was game. It sold out in days. Backed by a great band and amazing direction and production, a few of us scientists gave lectures on wildly different aspects of time. I explained how our space and time dimensions are connected, and how traveling through one (space) changes the other (time). What made me secretly happy was that the lecture actually covered the Two Postulates of Special Relativity [2], at beginner high-school level, and flowed from there. The audience liked the parts about space travel much more of course .. if we imagined all of Carré was a rocket, we could stay young, travel to the future, and party-crash the 20-year anniversary!
