Description: | In the Future Network Services project (6G), we develop new technology for future astronomy applications. Recently, we have developed an ultra-low noise power supply for use in amplifiers and analogue-to-digital converters for very low signals. To achieve an ultra-low noise power supply with good efficiency, we utilize a low-dropout regulator (LDO) with feedback to a switched-mode power supply regulator. With this prototype, we achieve a ripple/noise of 0.08 mVpp at the output. For comparison, a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) Agilent E3648A power supply has a noise ripple of 2 mVpp. For electronics that handle very sensitive signals, this number should be as low as possible, akin to the clean voltage of a battery. This solution combines the benefits of an LDO with good efficiency, making it an excellent choice for low noise while also reducing the carbon footprint of the power supply. FNS project team. |
