Dwingeloo telescope construction, July 1955

| Description: | This picture, found on the Nationaal Archief ( http://hdl.handle.net/10648/35429da6-828a-a382-e063-6df0900a6686 ), shows the construction on 1 July 1955. The 25m telescope construction is almost complete, though we can see the dish still being held in place by steel cables. In the background, we can see three pieces of a Würzburg Riese based antenna being constructed: an equatorial foundation, an observing cabin, and a mirror. In the foreground, we see a trestle ('bok') on which the dish was assembled. Also, on the ground are some temporary narrow guage rails, presumably used for transporting heavy materials. In the background (middle right), we see a horse and cart, reminding us that this picture was taken seventy years ago. |
