A large neutral gas cloud near the centre of the Virgo cluster

Submitter: Tom Oosterloo
Description: A large cloud of neutral hydrogen located near the centre of the Virgo cluster of galaxies was recently discovered with the WSRT. The galaxy NGC 4388 is falling into the Virgo cluster with a speed of 1500 km/s. This fast motion through the cluster causes the hot intra-cluster medium to blow out the cold gas from the galaxy into space.
