Effective area of 7x7 array of LOFAR high band elements

Submitter: Michel Arts
Description: This picture shows the effective area of a 7x7 array of LOFAR high band antennas as a function of frequency. One can see that at 100 MHz the effective area closely follows the physical area. For 170 and 240 MHz it can be seen that for increasing element distance the effective area drops. This effect can be explained by upcoming grating lobes. The effective area at 240 MHz remains constant for element distances above 1.2 meter. This indicates that the array becomes sparse with low coupling between elements and that they can be considered as individual elements.
