Description: | A huge disk of neutral hydrogen (orange) - more than 600,000 lightyear in diameter - has been observed with the WSRT around the elliptical galaxy B2 0648+27 (white) that is also known to host a strong compact radio source. This gas is the remnant of the collision of two large spiral galaxies that created this elliptical galaxy and that also ignited the radio activity of the massive black-hole in the centre. This work is part of the PhD thesis of B. Emonts (Groningen) and it is accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysis http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/astro-ph/0606303 ). |
