WMAP3 changes the reionization simulations

Submitter: Garrelt Mellema
Description: These two pictures show predictions from a reionization simulation performed using the new 3 year WMAP cosmological parameters. The bottom figure shows the (logarithm of the) 21cm signal as a function of frequency and position at the resolution of the simulation. The top figure shows the fluctuations in the 21cm signal (as would be measured by an interferometer such as LOFAR) for a beam width of 3 arcminutes and a band width of 100 kHz. These figures can be seen as cuts along the frequency axis through an observed image cube.
These new simulations mean good news for LOFAR as nearly all of the signal falls in the observable frequency range. The strength of the signal at the resolution of the LOFAR core will be of the order of 10-20 mK.
These simulations were performed by Garrelt Mellema (Stockholm, formerly ASTRON) and Ilian Iliev (CITA).
