Every journey starts with a first step

Submitter: Stefan Wijnholds
Description: Following the first fringes shown earlier on this medium, we're now able to present the first image from CS1.

On september 21, 2006 at 16:33.27 (CET) the station correlator on CS1 was started. 512 seconds later all subbands were scanned producing an array covariance cube containing all 4560 instantaneous visibilities provided by the 48 dual polarized low band antenna (LBA) elements covering all frequencies between 0 and 80 MHz with 1 second integration and 156 kHz resolution.

This full sky image was made based on 43 subbands of 156 kHz (6.7 MHz total bandwidth) near 57 MHz (the resonance frequency of the LBAs). After flagging the visibility data was Fourier transformed to produce the image. No calibration, deconvolution or other fancy stuff was applied (that will hopefully follow shortly).

The image shows Cas A and Cyg A near the northeastern horizon. Along the horizon from north to south-east the galactic plane is visible with increasing intensity near the southeastern horizon where we're getting close to the galactic centre. A (rather vague) straight band is visible from south-east to south-west ending in a point source near the southwestern horizon, which may be identified as the north polar spur and Vir A respectively.
