| Description: | This is a short foto storybook from the ASTRON/JIVE delegation that went to Tucson for the ADASS conference. We arrived at George H.W. Bush Intl. Airport Houston, where Harro Verkouter is shown mimicing the pose of his "hero". The LOC organised a visit to the Kitt Peak observatory, which are a whole bunch of telescopes atop a mountain. Only a few of those are shown in the second image. We visited the WIYN 3.5m and Mayall 4.0m telescope, and the clouds just parted long enough to give us an image of the nearest star at the McMath-Pierce Solar telescope shown in the third image. We were amazed to see their PDP-11 system and associated vt100 controlling the telescope with a service record almost as old as I am. The treat of the tour was a visit to the 25m VLBA antenna, where we climbed to the top and even stood in the dish, which I have yet to be allowed in Westerbork. The three days following this nice tour where spent in a room lit by laptop screens, listening to interesting, but a lot less pitoresque talks about GRIDs, databases, calibration, etc. The last image shows some of the wildlife we encountered during the breaks. |
