Amplitude illumination of a WSRT dish with the Focal Plane Array

Submitter: PHAROS team
Description: The Faraday / PHAROS Focal Plane Array prototype has been tested on a Westerbork dish. Good results, in terms of efficiency and system temperature, have been achieved. The Focal Plane Array concept, in which we synthesize the optimal beam by summing many elements from an antenna array, creates the possibility of enhancing the Field of View of a traditional telescope: a merger of reflector technology and phased array technology.

With the results achieved, we approach full understanding of the Focal Plane Array concept, paving the way for APERTIF: the FPA system for the WSRT.
